Sergey Maximishin

Sergey Maximishin (b.1964) was born in Kodyma village near Odessa. He spent his childhood in Kerch, Ukraine in the Crimea, and then moved to Leningrad in 1982, where he served in the Soviet army as a photographer with the Soviet Military Force Group in Cuba from 1985 to 1987. Maximishin graduated from the Leningrad Politechnical Institute in 1991 with a B.A. in Physics.

After working in the Hermitage Museum, Maximishin graduated from St. Petersburg Faculty of Photojournalism in 1998. From 1999-2003, he was a staff photographer for the Izvestia newspaper. After 2003, he began to work for a German agency Focus.

Maximishin’s photographs have been published in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Parool, Liberation, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Stern, Business Week, Focus, Der Profile, Corriere della Sera, Izvestia, Ogoniok, and Itogi. Maximishin is a two-time winner of the World Press Photo contest (2004, 2006), the recipient of numerous photography awards and the author of the bestseller, The Last Empire: 20 Years Later, published by Leonid Gusev and Mila Sidorenko Editions in 2007.

One of the younger generation of photographers born after the Revolution, his work focuses on people, everyday life, history and socialism. He has exhibited world-wide and won a major prize in Cuba for a project on the life of rural workers.
