On the occasion of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2021 (Jan 29-Feb 12) and the World Wetlands Day 2021 (Feb 2nd), a free photographic competition is being organized by Institut Français de Pondichéry (IFP) / French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP). The contest is open to all on the theme of Wetlands and Water in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry regions. Photographers from different parts of the country are eligible to apply. The categories include landscapes, humans, farming, fauna, small fauna, and flora.
It aims to raise public awareness of the rich cultural and natural heritage values of regional wetlands. Half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900. Today regional wetlands are still often underappreciated and drained for agriculture development and shrimp farming or human settlements. And untouched wetlands may lose rapidly their own water and flooding regime with the increasing demand for water supply.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February to raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands. This day marks the date of the adoption of the International Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
The theme of World Wetlands Day 2021 is “Wetland and Water”. The winner receives a prize to the value of 50,000 INR and the winning work will be exhibited at the French Institute of Pondicherry, from January 31st, 2021 for one month, as part of the Pondicherry Heritage Festival 2021.
